I’ve struggled with how to frame this article – and indeed, the purpose of this website. It’s gone through several rounds of iteration between Bitterman, Dirac, and I – and it will probably go through more. I’m going to attempt to answer the question, “Why is RoadToFailure here?”
We want to do our part to stop the self-destruction of America.
Perhaps it’s easiest to understand our purpose by hearing what this site was almost called: “Don’t Be a Fuck”. Tired of reading demagogues and hucksters such as David Broder or Robert Kiyosaki exploit a misinformed public, we were going to keep a running commentary on these scammers in an attempt to show the truth. Our goal would have been to help people become happier (and thus, not turn into “Fucks”) by steering them away from propagandists and “advice” given in bad faith. We’re still doing that, but we’ve adopted a larger scope...the threats to Freedom and Democracy.
The problem is that Broder and Kiyosaki are merely symptoms of the state of the U.S. and our morality – merely criticizing these idiots is not going to fix anything. We have to dig deeper.
“Can those who man the ship of State, deny that it is somewhat out of control?" ironically (and prophetically) stated El Presidente Regan in 1981. (A thanks to the band “Was (Not Was)” for bringing that quote to mind).
The purpose of this site is to shine that blinding light of truth, justice, and indignation on all those who are leading the world (and the United States) down the “Road to Failure”. We’ve seen where this road leads – inequality and injustice. Many people feel that “something” is wrong, but have a hard time articulating why. Those who seek to continue on this path exploit that confusing and ignorance to suggest their own remedies – which merely exacerbate the problem.
“The middle class is disappearing”, say the economists. “Well, then we obviously need to cut taxes on the rich, so they can make jobs for the middle class”, state the supply-side conservatives.
“Terrorism is growing”, say the foreign policy wonks. “Well, then we should kill more terrorists, so they won’t want to attack us”, state the neo-conservative hawks.
“Americans are unhappy, and feel like they lack purpose”, say the pollsters. “Well, then they should buy more things, so they’ll have a more meaningful life” state the marketers and so many corporations.
We’re different than sites such as Daily Kos or Grist. We don't do news, but instead discuss topics (which can, at times, be inspired by the news). Over time, you’ll see articles from not just us, but well-known thinkers in their various fields. Some pieces will be just our opinions; others will be thoroughly researched assaults on the ideas and people destroying the fabric of society. Everything shares a common thread, though – rooting out why we share this feeling that things have gone so terribly wrong.
And we’re going to figure out how to fix it.
